AUDITIONS: Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling

Our long awaited production Steel Magnolias is commencing this spring with auditions on Feb 15th & 16th at 7PM at the WCC Studio.  This magnificent classic is the story of sisterhood and heart as six incredible women in Chinquapin, LA gather to gossip, grieve, and gush at their local salon.  Lifelong friends, the characters are unforgettable and dynamic women.  As Robert Harling once described them: "female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel."  This is a show that will resound with all audiences.

Monologues are not necessary for auditions, but if you have something prepared, we're more than willing to take a look.  Cold readings will take place.

WCC Presents: The Picture of Dorian Gray!

The Wilde Coward Company of New Smyrna Beach is in full swing for their next production, The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde and adapted by John Osborne.  This classic story by Wilde is the tale of an enchanted painting belonging to the young Dorian Gray.  It grants him immortality but with a steep cost.  Typically seen as a thriller, especially in its 1945 film version, the implications of Dorian’s dark deeds go even further than mere thrills and chills.

“It’s a morality tale,” says director, Rachel Yadanza, “It shows the downfall of an obsession with youth and beauty.”  For this universal theme, WCC has chosen to pull the play out of its standard 19th century time period and play it more modern day.

For the upgrade, a little of the language has been changed and some roles have been gender-swapped.  Rockie Kobrin, local community theatre veteran, has taken the role of “Aunt Georgina Fermor,” head of the family rather than the original “Lord Fermor.”  And she’s just as formidable.

Many of the parts are the same as an audience would expect, with the show being carried by Clinton McChesney, Deland, as Lordy Henry; Adam Robert, Deland, as Basil Hallward; and of course Javad Osivand, Daytona Beach, as the titular Dorian Gray.  This is the first show for Osivand in several years.

“It’s been quite an undertaking,” says Osivand, “Dorian is complex and twisted and weird.  I like the challenge.”  The melodrama of the show is not lost either, especially personified in Dorian’s tragic love, Sybil Vane, played by Nicole Mericle, Deltona.

“She’s young and impressionable,” says Mericle, “Very sweet, but kind of not aware what she’s gotten herself into.”

WCC is excited to present the incredible story of The Picture of Dorian Gray.  To find out if love conquers all or if Dorian succumbs to his flawed sense of self, see it at the Shoestring Theatre in Lake Helen, FL on December 11, 12, and 13.  Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30pm, and the Sunday matinee is at 2:30pm.  Tickets are $15 adults, $12 students and can be purchased at the door or online at www.wildecoward.com/tickets.  For more information, please feel free to contact the WCC at wildecoward@gmail.com or 386-227-7444

MS Eviction Benefit Show!

MS Eviction Benefit Show!

A friend of WCC is suffering from MS and we wanted to help the only way we know how: by performing!  Here's her story:

My name is Kristina Cates and I am a 33 year-old mother of two who now lives in Jonesboro, Georgia, but my roots are in Central Florida. I went to Galaxy Middle School and Pine Ridge High School (Go Panthers) before attending Seminole Community College, my grandparents still live in Orange City, and I will be bringing my family back to live in Seminole County next summer. It is my home.

A fundraising event is happening in my honor on October 3rd in New Smyrna and I was hoping you could help me get the word out.  I was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis in 2005, at the end of my second year of college. It has been a ten year roller coaster with disability striking at random, sometimes taking the ability to walk and causing painful spasms, crippling vertigo and loss of fine motor skills. With medication my seizures are mostly controlled, however I am swiftly running out of options: the disease modifying drugs just aren’t controlling my relapses anymore.

Some talented and generous friends of mine in Volusia County are doing something very special this fall: They are holding a benefit in my honor in order to help me raise money for a procedure that has had a lot of promise for people with my disease course. The process, Hematopoietic Stem Cell Treatment, is grueling but has had an incredible success rate for those who have gone through it: most patients (87%, per a Swedish study published last year in the Journal of Neurology ) go on to live relapse free without having to rely on support medication.  Even with insurance, however, the treatment is very expensive. Added to this is the cost of staying in Chicago during the 8-week period required, air fare and other related expenses, making it a financial impossibility for my family.

The Wilde Coward Company of New Smyrna is holding a "MS Eviction Benefit Show" on Saturday, October 3rd at 7:00 pm. It will be a variety show featuring Broadway dance, theatre and musical standards. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at ww.wildecoward.com/tickets or (386) 227-7444.

Join us as we celebrate this amazing woman!

WCC Presents: The Last Five Years

Our 2015-2016 season is off to a breathtaking start!  The Last Five Years is a contemporary musical recently leaving Broadway.  It's a fascinating story presented in a unique way.  The characters, Cathy and Jamie, are reliving their relationship, but Cathy is going through the story backwards in tandem with Jamie who is moving through it in a traditional linear mode.  This incredible 2 person musical shows the making and breaking of an intense 5 year relationship.  Wilde Coward Company is excited to take on this challenging show, our first ever musical.

And we've added another element to shake it up even more: Shown through two opposite journeys, and with TWO incredible casts, each show is guaranteed to delight you.

Arnold Desmarais: Painter Extraordinaire

This summer we are offering a 7 week course with the terrific Arnold Desmarais.  He's a landscape painter who has shown in multiple galleries all over the country.  And he's coming to teach painting for the Wilde Coward Company!  His class will be held Tuesday nights from 7-9PM beginning June 9th.  The cost for all 7 weeks is $154.

This class is geared toward beginners.  If you've never picked up a brush or perhaps want to hone some of those fundamental skills, this is for you.

ONLY ENTHUSIASTIC ARTISTS WITH A THIRST FOR FUN NEED APPLY!

Arnold invites artists of all levels and mediums to explore their craft through the eyes of realism.  It will focus on such basics as drawing and perspective, what constitutes an impactful composition and materials as well as more in-depth fundamentals as color recession, temperature and light necessary for creating paintings that are convincingly real and meaningful.

Please come with enthusiasm and plenty of questions so that we can make the class as fun and fruitful for all!

And here's a little bio about our instructor....

ARNOLD DESMARAIS
B. 1952

“My paintings are visual stories that speak to the viewer in quiet and comforting ways of a simpler time that touches deep and private emotions. The challenge of true art is to help the viewer to seamlessly transcend the technical skill and travel to the private and personal places in their mind and heart.”

Arnold Desmarais was born into a New England family of artists in 1952. As a young child, he was formally introduced to art at the Rhode Island School of Design where he flourished as a prodigy. Later as a young man, he continued with painting and illustration while simultaneously earning his degrees from Bryant University.

Arnold’s career afforded him the opportunity to combine his love of art with his business skills in the fashion industry. This world not only gave him a platform to create for such prestigious clients as Anne Klein, Liz Claiborne, Bill Blass, Donna Karen and more but also the opportunity to travel the museums of the world to experience first-hand the work of the great masters. Among his clients for design are the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre of Paris. It is in 1990 that Arnold sold his successful commercial business to devote his life to his love of fine art painting and although he is considered self-taught he attributes his personal growth to the workshops he has taken with the artists he most admires; Joseph McGurl, Donald Demers, Jim Wilcox and others.

His love of the sea and antique boats comes from a life time spent by the sea. Born on an island, and spending a large portion of his life living in coastal New England afforded him the opportunity hone his skills and created an understanding of  coastal scenes and the honoring the vessels of by gone errors. He taught at the Cape Cod Artist Association as well as the Cape Museum of Art and sponsored many Plein-Air trips to Europe.  Many of Arnold’s works have been exhibited in museums and national shows. Arnold now travels the Eastern Seaboard from his home in Florida to Maine painting the coastal image that defines his art.

Summer Classes 2015

Summer Classes 2015

Outside of our exciting summer camp, we're having a special summer schedule of classes.  These will span 3 weeks in June and 4 weeks in July, so will be treated more as a workshop style classes rather than purely educational.  To see the new schedule and decide which classes you'd like to take, visit our schedule page here.

The breakdown of the new classes are as so:
Dance
Our dance classes are broken down by age instead of skill level for the summer.  We have a variety of courses featuring hip hop, jazz, lyrical/contemporary, tap, and ballet.  These will be working on specific techniques, skills and combinations, readying our students for the Fall semester and recital/competition season.

Theatre
We are going to be doing a Summer Kids Show.  This will require students to take 2 2-hour classes a week to get all the rehearsing that will be needed to bring a production to life.  If you feel your student can only commit to one 2 hour session a week, then they may still join, but will be considered for a smaller role in the show.  Improv Games will still be held on Fridays at 4:30PM, and a Kids Theatre course will be available on Saturdays at 10AM.

Fine Art
Our very own Ryan Miller will be doing art classes geared to two different age groups 6-10 & 11-16.  They will work with a different medium every week: drawing, sculpting, paper masks, etc.  They will also be assisting with prop building and set design for the Summer Kids Show.  We will have one adult painting class with the incredible Arnold Desmarais.  Arnold is a visiting artist who specializes in acrylics, but his class will work with any painting style you'd like to explore (watercolor, oil, etc.) and will focus primarily on landscapes.  To learn more about Arnold, visit his webpage by clicking here.  This is a terrific introductory class for anyone who would like to try painting.  Ages 16+

Yoga, Zumba, Etc.
Our adult recreational classes will continue as normal with yoga on Tues @ 6PM and Sat @ 11AM.  Adult Hip Hop will be available on Mondays at 6:00PM and Zumba will continue on the last Friday of every month at 6:30PM.

***For enrollment and pricing, please feel free to contact us at wildecoward@gmail.com or 386-227-7444.  And be sure to check out the calendar for classes and times!
